Autonomous Operation
The Burro can operate autonomously in several modes. The safe and reliable function of these modes depends on the operator's understanding of their capabilities and limitations.
Sensor Activity by Mode
Different sensors are active depending on the operational mode. Understanding this is key to safe operation.
Operational Design Domain (ODD)
The ODD defines the specific conditions under which the Burro's autonomous systems are designed to work. Operating outside of these conditions can lead to unpredictable behavior and is considered misuse.
Environment: Worksites with clear, navigable paths (e.g., nursery rows, field headlands, greenhouse aisles). Avoid public roads and areas with unpredictable cross-traffic. For reliable indoor navigation in dynamic or featureless environments (e.g., open warehouses, areas with frequently moved racks), the use of specified reflective paint patterns on the floor may be required.
Path Conditions: Functions on dirt, gravel, and concrete. Performance may be degraded by deep mud, standing water (>4 in), tall grass, or highly uneven terrain.
Weather: Designed for operation in dry to light rain conditions. Heavy rain, snow, or fog can obscure sensors and degrade performance.
Lighting: Functions in daylight and well-lit nighttime conditions. Performance may be limited in complete darkness or in rapidly changing light conditions (e.g., moving in and out of shadows). The machine's onboard lights are for visibility to others and are not sufficient for the navigation system to operate safely in darkness, which requires ambient, well-lit conditions.
Operator Intervention
If the Burro stops because it cannot navigate a situation, the operator must intervene.
Assess the Situation1
Determine why the Burro has stopped. The UI may provide a reason (e.g., "Obstacle Detected").
Clear the Path2
If the path is blocked by a movable object, safely remove it. The Burro should resume its mission automatically.
Force Motion Past Obstacle3
If the Burro is stopped by an obstacle but the path is clear, you can press the black Forward (FWD) button. This action temporarily overrides the obstacle detection and forces the Burro to move forward for approximately 1 meter.
This action overrides the primary obstacle detection system. The operator becomes solely responsible for ensuring the path is clear. Improper use could lead to collision, equipment damage, or serious injury.
Take Manual Control4
If the Burro needs to be maneuvered around an obstacle, select Manual Control from the UI to carefully drive the Burro to a clear area.
Resume Mission5
Once clear, re-engage the autonomous mission from the UI.
